PICC INSERTION

A peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) is a long, thin tube inserted into the body through a vein in the upper arm with the end of this catheter goes into the Superior Vena Cava (SVC).

The PICC is used  to infuse medication and nutrition, and also to draw blood when lab work is needed.

Use of a PICC is the more efficient option when a patient needs intravenous (IV) treatment over a longer period of time, or if maintaining IV access is difficult.

A PICC can also be used for Chemotherapy.

MIDLINE INSERTION

A midline is a long peripheral IV catheter placed into a peripheral vein, terminating near the axillae, distal to the shoulder.  The same veins accessed for PICC placement in the upper arm are also used when inserting a midline.
Midlines are a great solution for patients with difficult IV access receiving non-vesicant and non-irritant therapy.
Midlines are contraindicated when there is a history of venous thrombosis, restricted blood flow to the extremities, and renal disease requiring peripheral vein preservation.

PERIPHERAL
IV ACCESS

Proper Ultrasound assessment of the vasculature is one of the most important aspects to be proficient in IV insertions.  This skill helps to increase success rates while decreasing potential negative outcomes.

Use of Ultrasound-Guided Peripheral IV (USGPIV) has also become popular for inpatients who are requesting this method over regular IV insertions. This is because USGPIV has proven to be more successful, requires fewer attempts, and is less painful, resulting in increased patient satisfaction.

IMPLANTED PORT ACCESS

A port-a-cath, also referred to as a port, is an implanted device that allows easy access to a patient’s veins. A port is surgically-inserted completely beneath the skin. Ports must accessed under sterile conditions specifically with a Huber needle. Its design contributes to a
very low risk of infection.

ASSESSMENT AND
TROUBLESHOOTING

It’s important to balance the clinical needs of patients with risks associated with any vascular device. This requires having processes in place for selecting devices. The association between thrombosis, infections and devices highlights why use of some devices should be considered with caution. Despite this knowledge, some devices may not be placed for clinically valid reasons. Piedmont Vascular can collaborate through those tough situations and provide the appropriate solution.

COACHING AND
STAFF EDUCATION

A board certified clinician can attend your skills blitz, provide a skills specific didactic course, or skill specific coaching to help your clinical employees obtain and maintain competency in a variety of vascular access related topics.
